Health Cover Built for Your Search Year

Germany requires proof of health insurance before it'll grant your Opportunity Card - MAWISTA Reisecare is built specifically for applicants in exactly your position.

Why you can't just use any policy

Living and working in Germany comes with a legal obligation to carry health insurance - but plenty of ordinary travel or expat policies quietly fall short of what German authorities actually require for a residence permit. Rather than leave you to untangle the fine print, we point applicants toward one policy built for this exact situation: MAWISTA Reisecare.

It doesn't matter whether you're arriving to start your search from scratch or already have a role lined up - Reisecare covers you either way. The moment you land a job of 20 hours a week or more, you're eligible to switch onto Germany's public health insurance system and drop Reisecare, refund included for whatever time you didn't use.

What you get

Accepted everywhere

Recognised by German missions and Foreigners' Registration Offices worldwide - no back-and-forth over whether it qualifies.

Just €1.25 a day

One card payment covers your whole stay - no hidden add-ons, no surprise renewal fees.

24/7 medical assistance

Round-the-clock support in English, so a medical question at 2am doesn't have to wait for a reply.

Cancel anytime, refunded

Land your 20-hour job and switch to public insurance whenever you like - you get back whatever you didn't use.

What it actually costs

MAWISTA Reisecare runs €1.25 a day outside the US and Canada. Book it for your full stay up front - typically the same one year your Opportunity Card covers - and pay once by card.

It also travels with you: cover isn't limited to German soil, so a trip home or a weekend elsewhere in Europe doesn't leave you exposed.

Questions applicants usually ask

Why can't I just use travel insurance from home?

Most travel policies aren't built to satisfy German residence-permit rules, and authorities can and do reject them. MAWISTA Reisecare is designed specifically to meet that bar, so you avoid the risk of a rejected application over an insurance technicality.

What happens once I find a job?

As soon as you start a role of 20 hours a week or more, you become eligible for Germany's public health insurance system. You can cancel Reisecare at that point and get a refund for the unused portion.

Does it cover care outside Germany too?

Yes - Reisecare isn't limited to German territory, so trips elsewhere during your search year are still covered.

Do I have to pay for the whole year at once?

You book and pay in a single card transaction for the length of stay you register - in practice, most applicants book it to match their Opportunity Card's one-year validity.
