What Is the Opportunity Card?
The Chancenkarte gives skilled professionals from outside the EU a legal way to travel to Germany and search for a job on the ground - no signed employment contract required beforehand. Eligibility rests on a recognised qualification or a transparent points score, and applicants must show they can support themselves financially for the whole of their stay.

Life in Germany on the Opportunity Card
Holders can look for work without going through Germany's usual, often lengthy, qualification-recognition process. To qualify, you generally need at least two years of vocational training or a completed degree, plus German at level A1 or English at level B2.
The card lets you take on a short trial position or part-time work of up to 20 hours a week while you search. It's valid for one year, with the option to extend for up to two more at your local immigration office once you're settled in.
Who Can Apply?
Eligibility runs on a simple points system: weigh your own qualifications and experience against the criteria below, and reach six points to qualify. At minimum you'll need German (A1) or English (B2), two years of recognised vocational training or a degree, and proof you can cover your living costs - a signed part-time contract works well here. Extra points come from stronger language skills, work experience, age, and ties to Germany.

How the Points System Works

Baseline requirement: German at A1 or English at B2, at least two years of recognised vocational training, and proof of sufficient funds - a part-time employment contract (up to 20 hrs/week) is a common way to show this.

4 points if your foreign qualification is partially recognised, or if you're cleared to work in a regulated profession such as teaching, nursing, or engineering - few applicants qualify here.

3 points for five years of relevant experience within the last seven, following two years of training in your field - or 3 points instead for strong German (B2).

2 points for two years of experience preceded by vocational training within the last five years. Being 35 or younger also earns 2 points, as does German at B1.

1 point if you're 40 or younger, plus 1 point for a documented earlier stay in Germany of at least six months (tourist visits don't count).

1 point for excellent English (C1) or workable German (A2) - or if your qualification is in an occupation facing a labor shortage in Germany, or you're applying together with your spouse.
